Did you know that as a small business you can request a refund for a portion of previous year's long distance bill? This is a one-time refund. It's called the
long distance telephone excise tax. The tax covers the timeframe of March 2001 to August 2006.
To claim the refund, you can either determine the actual amount of taxes paid during the
period or take a standard refund. The standard refund is $30-$60 depending on the number of exemptions you have. If you are a sole proprietor that reports $25,000 or less in gross receipts you can take the standard refund amount.
Otherwise you must complete Form 8913,
Credit for Federal Telephone Excise Tax Paid. You can determine the taxes paid or use a formula to determine the amount.
For businesses with 250 or fewer employees, the maximum refund is 2 percent
of the total telephone expenses paid. See the IRS’s website at for more information about how your
small business tax refund.
