Business Venture Tip: Choosing A Business To Buy

business purchase
Today's Business Venture Tip: Choose A Business That Suits your Talent And Interests - Some people say follow your passion or talents when you consider what business to buy. Other people say find a growing, profitable market segment and pick a business there. I’ve seen people succeed choosing either way. More often it’s a blend of both. If you’re talent lies in something more obscure you’ll be taking a risk that it won’t be profitable. However, if you hate what you’re doing money won’t help. In general, look for ways your skills can help you buy a business in a stable or growing market segment. Keep an open mind too -- you never know what you might come up with.

USABizMart viewers rated a tanning salons opportunity, a florist shop company, and a gas station/c-store as some of the more popular businesses for sale that were listed yesterday on USABizMart.com by business brokers, agents, and owners of small businesses.

I am late in responding to your blog. I am sorry for that. But it seems like a good forum for me to get some questions answered. I have been casually shopping for a small business for about 18 months. My questions are general, but very basic to the process.

My first question covers most of my main concerns with the process. That being that I don't feel like I can truly trust the process. According to all the business listings for sale I have seen, one would be led to believe that none of them are lemons and all are free of any significant problems. Another pet peeve of mine is when I see the reason the owners of business are selling it are, "to pursue other interests". C'mon! On one hand I can understand this. If I were a small business owner, I would of course be careful as to what problems with the business I would disclose to potential buyers. But since at the moment I am a prospective, I am left to sort out what and who to believe.

In the past I have asked for tax returns on the businesses I have had interest in. In short, the tax returns show the business(es) to barely be profitable. Then I am told that this is normal and one should be more attention to the "stabilized tax return". This concept flies in the face of what the folks at the SBA have advised me. And yet, I cannot get anyone to believe that it is reason for me to be suspicous of a business.

I have other questions I would like answered by an objective and disinterested party, but I will hold those for a later date. Does anyone have any thoughts about my concerns. Thanks in advance!
