The Office of Advocacy for the Small Business Association (SBA) released a study this week about the rates of self employment for veterans. They found that disabled veterans are 25 to 50 percent less likely to be self employed. That is compared to other veterans. The reason? Most often their disabilities limit their ability to work. The study covers the years 1985 to 2005.
The links given to the press release are incorrect. However, this is part of an ongoing study about veterans and small business ownership. The data I found say it's more common for veterans to start their own business rather than to buy existing business. It seems the SBA could reach out to this population educating them on various options. Buying an existing business is generally a less risky, less expensive route to self-employment than being an entrepreneur.
