MasterCard Worldwide's 2006 Annual Global Small Business SurveyI found this study fascinating. Mastercard polled small business owners around the world. They heard back from 500 small businesses in the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, France, Brazil, China, Hong Kong and Australia.
One question they asked was an entrepreneurs motivations for owning a small business.
Across the world, small business owners agreed that making enough money to cover living expenses (70%) and having more control over the future (64%) were important motivations for them.
Here's where it gets interesting.
Top reasons for owning a small business:To providing jobs and contribute to society
In Brazil 71% said providing employment was important. 64% said contributing to society or the community is.
To leave a legacy for posterity
In China their biggest motivation is to pass on their small business to their family (59%).
For more independence
In the US we want to be our own bosss (67% said is an important motivation).
